Preparing and Upgrading on a Linux Server > Before Upgrading to APTARE StorageConsole 9.1.01

Version 9.1.01
Before Upgrading to APTARE StorageConsole 9.1.01
Ensure that you have a valid system backup. For additional information refer to the APTARE StorageConsole System Administrator’s Guide. Prior to executing the upgrade utility, APTARE recommends:
A cold backup of the Portal / Database server(s) file systems.
A backup of the file systems containing the Oracle database (typically /data01-3 on Linux) is only valid if it was taken while Oracle was completely shut down.
An export of the database.
If you have installed any patches on your present StorageConsole version, check the APTARE StorageConsole Release Notes to verify that they are included in this release. If you are uncertain, check with the APTARE Global Support Services. In most cases, previously installed patches are included in this release.
Verify that the libXtst.so.6 libraries are installed.
In the Portal, verify that the Data Collectors are set for automatic updates. This setting triggers the automatic download of updated application logic to the Data Collectors in your enterprise. This download is required to ensure the Data Collectors are running with the latest compatible version. Refer to the vendor-specific Data Collector Installation Guide for additional information about Data Collectors. See Data Collector Upgrades to ensure that the aptare.jar is upgraded successfully.
If you are upgrading from version 8.4.x to 9.1.01, you will need to re-install Data Collectors by running the Upgrade Utility Installer and the Upgrade Utility. See Re-Installing Data Collectors.
Identify the Java Version on the Data Collector Server and ensure that a 64-bit server is used for the Data Collector Server.
Refer to the following documentation:

Data Collector Upgrades
IMPORTANT: The Data Collector aptare.jar may not upgrade automatically. Use the following criteria to determine if you need to upgrade each Data Collector.
Step 1: Verify if a Data Collector aptare.jar Upgrade is Required

* Once you’ve upgraded your Data Collector to aptare.jar version 9.0.1.03, the automatic upgrader will work as expected, provided you have configured automatic upgrades, as described in “Managing and Monitoring Data Collection” in the APTARE StorageConsole User’s Guide.
Step 2: Upgrade the Data Collector aptare.jar
Choose one of the following options to upgrade a Data Collector. Only one of these options should be executed.
Option 1: First upgrade the Data Collector to the latest aptare.jar version and then upgrade the Portal to version 9.1.01. After the upgrade, the correct aptare.jar will be applied if automatic upgrades are configured.
Option 2: After the Portal has been upgraded to 9.1.01, any version of the 9.x Data Collector can be upgraded manually using the <HOME>/mbs/bin/downloadlib.sh or <HOME>\mbs\bin\downloadlib.bat script.
Upgrading Data Collectors
When upgrading within 9.x release versions, for example from 9.0 to 9.1.01 refer to Step 1: Verify if a Data Collector aptare.jar Upgrade is Required. When upgrading from version 8.4.x, there are special considerations. The following table outlines those considerations.

Re-Installing Data Collectors
APTARE StorageConsole 9.1.01 binaries are only compatible with JRE 1.7. This requires a re-install of all Data Collectors for systems on versions prior to 9.0. The re-install process uses the data collector installer to detect the necessary upgrades. This smart process recognizes your existing configuration and will use the same URL, Data Collector Name, and Passcode. Policies are retained when Data Collectors are re-installed.
To re-install a Data Collector run the script sc_datacollector_linux_9101_<MMDDYYYY>.bin.

Refer to the Data Collector installation guide specific to the backup or storage system vendor we are collecting from for details. See also About Symantec NetBackup. Please note that when re-installing Data Collectors, only the currently supported operating systems are compatible. If your current Data Collectors are installed on operating systems other than Windows or Linux, you may need to re-evaluate your data collection strategy.
For performance reasons, APTARE recommends that you do not install Data Collectors on the same server as the StorageConsole Portal. However, if you must have both on the same server, verify that the Portal and Data Collector software do not reside in the same directory.
About Symantec NetBackup
In an effort to improve data collection configuration, scalability, and monitoring, APTARE’s agent-less data collector for Symantec NetBackup environments now support a centralized data collection architecture with remote NetBackup data collection. A single Data Collector can be used to gather data from many NetBackup Master servers. You no longer have to install the APTARE Collector on the NetBackup Master server. This also allows for remote data collection from the Symantec NetBackup appliances.
Centralized Data Collection (Recommended)
To adopt a centralized collection approach, install the Data Collector software on a Data Collector server and create one NetBackup Data Collector policy in the Portal. With this policy, you can configure all the master servers from which you collect data. See the APTARE StorageConsole Data Collector Installation Guide for Backup Manager for complete instructions.
Distributed Data Collection
When upgrading from 8.4.02 to 9.x, to maintain a distributed NetBackup data collection environment, where a Data Collector is installed on each NetBackup Master Server, a tool is available to help with the migration. This is a run once migration tool. Contact the APTARE Global Support Services for details and support.
