Upgrading a Portal and Data Collectors > Before Upgrading to APTARE StorageConsole 10

Version 10.0.00
Before Upgrading to APTARE StorageConsole 10
Ensure that you have a valid system backup. For additional information refer to the APTARE StorageConsole System Administrator’s Guide. Prior to executing the upgrade utility, APTARE recommends:
A cold backup of the Portal / Database server(s) file systems.
A backup of the file systems containing the Oracle database (typically /data01-3 on Linux) is only valid if it was taken while Oracle was completely shut down.
An export of the database.
If you have installed any patches on your present StorageConsole version, check the APTARE StorageConsole Release Notes to verify that they are included in this release. If you are uncertain, check with the APTARE Global Support Services. In most cases, previously installed patches are included in this release.
Verify that the libXtst.so.6 libraries are installed.
In the Portal, verify that the Data Collectors are set for automatic updates. This setting triggers the automatic download of updated application logic to the Data Collectors in your enterprise. This download is required to ensure the Data Collectors are running with the latest compatible version. Refer to the vendor-specific Data Collector Installation Guide for additional information about Data Collectors. See Data Collector Upgrades to ensure that the aptare.jar is upgraded successfully.
The Portal and Database components should be installed on the same server. Although the installer includes an option to install these components on two separate servers, this option exists for legacy customers, is no longer a standard supported configuration and requires the engagement of Professional Services.
Identify the Java Version on the Data Collector Server and ensure that a 64-bit server is used for the Data Collector Server.
Refer to the following documentation:
APTARE StorageConsole Certified Configurations Guide
Data Collector Installation Guides
Beginning with APTARE StorageConsole 10, Portal upgrades will automatically enable privileges for newly added reports and certain features/functions, for all Administrators. This does not impact previously configured privileges. The Super User can manually revoke any Administrator privileges that have been automatically enabled.
Best Practice: Grant user privileges via User Groups.

Portal and Database Upgrades (Linux Portal)
Due to functionality incorporated into StorageConsole versions 9.1 and 10, additional disk space is required for the Portal upgrade. See Task 2: Pre-Installation Configuration (Linux) for the initial minimum disk space requirements.

Data Collector Upgrades
IMPORTANT: The Data Collector aptare.jar may not upgrade automatically. Use the following criteria to determine if you need to manually upgrade the aptare.jar.
Step 1: Verify if a Manual Data Collector aptare.jar Upgrade is Required

Releases after 9.0.01

No manual Data Collector aptare.jar upgrade is required. The correct aptare.jar will be applied if automatic upgrades are configured.
* Once you’ve upgraded your Data Collector to aptare.jar version 9.0.1.03, the automatic upgrader will work as expected, provided you have configured automatic upgrades, as described in “Managing and Monitoring Data Collection” in the APTARE StorageConsole User’s Guide.
Step 2: Upgrade the Data Collector aptare.jar
Choose one of the following options to upgrade a Data Collector. Only one of these options should be executed.
Option 1: First upgrade the Data Collector to the latest aptare.jar version and then upgrade the Portal to version 10. After the upgrade, the correct 10 aptare.jar will be applied if automatic upgrades are configured. Refer to “Managing and Monitoring Data Collection” in APTARE StorageConsole User’s Guide.
Option 2: After the Portal has been upgraded to 10, any version of the 9.x Data Collector can be upgraded manually using the <HOME>/mbs/bin/downloadlib.sh or <HOME>\mbs\bin\downloadlib.bat script.
Manual Download of the aptare.jar File
Use the following procedure to manually update your Data Collector if:
Automatic updates have not been enabled via the Upgrade Manager.
For some reason, the automatic update failed.
You simply want to manually update Data Collectors.
1. Use the downloadlib utility to manually download the aptare.jar file. Note that this utility must be run with administrative privileges.
Windows: <Home>\mbs\bin\downloadlib.bat
Linux: <Home>/mbs/bin/downloadlib.sh
2. If you run the downloadlib utility and you get the following message, it indicates that the restore failed or is in progress: Restore has been running for more than 10 minutes, unable to proceed with collector upgrade.
To proceed, delete the restore.txt file and re-run downloadlib.
Windows: <Home>\upgrade\restore.txt
Linux: <Home>/upgrade/restore.txt
Note: When the Data Collector is upgraded via the automatic update, if you run downloadlib within 3 minutes of the automatic update completion time, it will take 3 minutes before downloadlib starts the update.

Re-Installing Data Collectors
About IBM TSM Data Collectors
For upgrading TSM Data Collectors from ANY release previous to 9.2.01, you must uninstall and then perform a fresh install of the TSM Data Collectors. This is different from the upgrade methods for other collectors.
