Planning the Data Collector Deployment

Version 9.1
For details, refer to the APTARE StorageConsole 9.1 Certified Configurations Guide and the APTARE StorageConsole Data Collector Installation Guide for Backup Manager.
Planning the Data Collector Deployment
1. Identify a server where the Data Collector software will be installed. Server requirements include:
64-bit OS. See the APTARE StorageConsole 9.1 Certified Configurations Guide for supported operating systems.
Support Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.7.
Reside in the same time zone as the subsystem from which data will be collected.
For performance reasons, APTARE recommends that you do not install Data Collectors on the same server as the StorageConsole Portal. However, if you must have both on the same server, verify that the Portal and Data Collector software do not reside in the same directory.
Install only one Data Collector on a server (or OS instance).
TSM data collection requires a dedicated Data Collector—that is, it cannot be included in a Data Collector policy with other collectors, such as capacity Data Collectors. Refer to the APTARE StorageConsole 9.1 Certified Configurations Guide for sizing guidelines.
dsmadmc must be installed on this server.
2. On the Data Collector server, add entries to the local hosts file, both resolving to the Portal server IP address. Example:
172.16.2.2 aptareportal.<yourdomain>.com
172.16.2.3 aptareagent.<yourdomain>.com
3. In the Portal, add a server for each TSM host server: Admin > Hosts and Domains > Hosts and Host Groups
For Linux platforms, this TSM server must be added to dsm.sys in order for the Data Collector to connect to the dsmadmc command.
External Name - Displayed in the Portal.
Internal Name - Must match the host name of the TSM server.

4. In the Portal, add a Data Collector: Admin > Data Collection > Collectors. The User ID and Passcode configured in this step will be used later when you install the Data Collector software on the Data Collector server. This configuration enables communication between the Portal and the Data Collector server. Refer to the APTARE StorageConsole Data Collector Installation Guide for Backup Manager for details.
5. Select the Data Collector and add a TSM policy for each TSM host server: Add > Tivoli Storage Manager.
Field
Description
Domain
Typically, only one domain is listed; Managed Services Providers will have a domain for each customer.
Backup Management Server
This is the TSM Host Server with which the Data Collector will communicate. The servers that you added should all be listed here. Select one and verify that the IP address and OS information are correct.
Instance Name
Linux TSM host servers: TSM Instance Name
Windows TSM host servers: IP address of TSM instance
Host Port
The port number for TSM administrative sessions (the value of the TCPADMINPORT server option). Typically, 1500.
Backup Software Location
Home of the dsmadmc command on the Data Collector Server.
Windows default: C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient
Linux default: /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin
User ID and Password
TSM ID with query and select privileges.
6. On the Data Collector server, install/update the Data Collector software, using the instructions in the APTARE StorageConsole Data Collector Installation Guide for Backup Manager.
