Planning the Data Collector Deployment

Version 9.1
For details, refer to the APTARE StorageConsole 9.1 Certified Configurations Guide and the APTARE StorageConsole Data Collector Installation Guide for Capacity Manager.
Planning the Data Collector Deployment
1. Identify a server where the Data Collector software will be installed. Server requirements include:
64-bit OS. See the APTARE StorageConsole 9.1 Certified Configurations Guide for supported operating systems.
Support Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.7.
Reside in the same time zone as the subsystem from which data will be collected.
For performance reasons, APTARE recommends that you do not install Data Collectors on the same server as the StorageConsole Portal. However, if you must have both on the same server, verify that the Portal and Data Collector software do not reside in the same directory.
Install only one Data Collector on a server (or OS instance).
Ports: 5988 for SMI-S, 1433 for DB
2. On the Data Collector server, add entries to the local hosts file, both resolving to the Portal server IP address.
Example:
172.16.2.2 aptareportal.<yourdomain>.com
172.16.2.3 aptareagent.<yourdomain>.com
3. In the Portal, add or select a Data Collector: Admin > Data Collection > Collectors. The User ID and Passcode configured in this step will be used later when you install the Data Collector software on the Data Collector server. This configuration enables communication between the Portal and the Data Collector server.
4. Select the Data Collector and add a Compellent policy: Add > Dell Compellent.
Field
Description
Domain
Typically, only one domain is listed; Managed Services Providers will have a domain for each customer.
Schedule
Frequency for Dell Compellent data collection.
Enterprise Manager Address
IP address or host name of the Dell Compellent Enterprise Manager.
SMI-S Port
Port for access to the Enterprise Manager SMI-S Provider. Default is 5988.
Use HTTPS
This option is turned off by default. Check it to have the Data Collector use HTTPS to connect to the Enterprise Manager SMI-S Provider.
SMI-S User ID & Password
User ID and password for logging into Enterprise Manager SMI-S Provider to collect Compellent data. Current versions of Compellent Enterprise Manager have an 8-character limit for SMI-S passwords. This limit may be changed in future versions of Enterprise Manager.
Enterprise Manager DB Address
IP address or host name of the Compellent Enterprise Manager database.
DB Port
Port used by the Enterprise Manager database. This port is not enabled by default on the SQL server. Once this port is configured on the SQL server, the server must be restarted before data collection can occur. Default is 1433.
DB User ID & Password
The SQL login must be a SQL Server authentication. Using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio, on the Server Roles screen, only public needs to be checked. On the User Mapping screen, public and db_datareader should be checked for the compmsadb database.
Array Performance Schedule
Frequency for collection array details and array performance statistics.
5. On the Data Collector server, install/update the Data Collector software, using the instructions in the APTARE StorageConsole Data Collector Installation Guide for Capacity Manager.
