CommVault Simpana - Planning the Data Collector Deployment

Version 9.1.01
For details, refer to the APTARE StorageConsole Certified Configurations Guide and the APTARE StorageConsole Data Collector Installation Guide for Backup Manager.
CommVault Simpana - Planning the Data Collector Deployment
1. Identify a server where the Data Collector software will be installed. Server requirements include:
64-bit OS. See the APTARE StorageConsole Certified Configurations Guide for supported operating systems.
Support Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.7.
Reside in the same time zone as the subsystem from which data will be collected.
For performance reasons, APTARE recommends that you do not install Data Collectors on the same server as the StorageConsole Portal. However, if you must have both on the same server, verify that the Portal and Data Collector software do not reside in the same directory.
Install only one Data Collector on a server (or OS instance).
The Data Collector should be installed on the same machine as the WMI proxy server.
Open TCP/IP access to the CommVault database, Port 1433.
WMI Proxy access requires the following: Port 135 is required for skipped files collection and 445 for CIFS over TCP. A fixed port can be configured for WMI as specified at: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb219447%28VS.85%29.aspx
Read-only user configured on the CommServe server.
2. On the Data Collector server, add entries to the local hosts file, both resolving to the Portal server IP address.
Example:
172.16.2.2 aptareportal.<yourdomain>.com
172.16.2.3 aptareagent.<yourdomain>.com

3. In the Portal, add a server for each CommServe server (Utility Node): Admin > Hosts and Domains > Hosts and Host Groups.
External Name - Displayed in the Portal.
Internal Name - Must match the host name of the CommServe server; fully qualified domain name (FQDN).
IP Address of the Utility Node

Type - CommVault Server
4. In the Portal, add or select a Data Collector: Admin > Data Collection > Collectors. The User ID and Passcode configured in this step will be used later when you install the Data Collector software on the Data Collector server. This configuration enables communication between the Portal and the Data Collector server.
5. Select the Data Collector and add a policy for each host server: Add > CommVault Simpana.
Field
Description
Domain
Typically, only one domain is listed; Managed Services Providers will have a domain for each customer.
CommServe Server Address
IP address or host name of the CommServe server.
CommServe DB Server Address
IP address or host name of the CommServe database system - may be empty (in which case the CommServe database host name defaults to that of the CommServe server).
DB Server Port
Port used by the CommServe database (defaults to 1433). This port is not enabled by default on the SQL server. Once this port is configured on the SQL server, the server must be restarted before data collection can occur.
DB Server User ID & Password
User ID and password for the CommServe database. This is an MS SQL server login with at least the following roles and permissions in the CommServ database:
db_datareaderEXECUTE
dbo.GetDateTimeEXECUTE
dbo.GetUnixTimeEXECUTE
dbo.GetJobFailureReasonEXECUTE
dbo.JMGetLocalizedMessageFunc
Probes to Activate with Schedules
Inventory, Jobs, Drives in Use: Frequency of data collection for these probes.
Skipped File Details
Activates skipped file collection details - this collects which files had problems during backup/restore and needed to be skipped. It collects client logs and may require WMI proxy information. By default, this field is not selected. Activating this field will cause another collection to run periodically that may take hours (depending on the number of clients).
CommServe Server Domain
Domain associated with the User ID.
CommServe Server User ID & Password
User name with administrative privileges on the CommServe server. The User ID and Password fields are required for the Skipped File Details collection.
WMI Proxy Address
IP address or host name of the WMI Proxy. If this field is blank, 127.0.0.1 will be used.
6. On the Data Collector server, install/update the Data Collector software, using the instructions in the APTARE StorageConsole Data Collector Installation Guide for Backup Manager.
