Veritas Backup Exec - Planning the Data Collector Deployment

Version 10.0.00
For details, refer to the APTARE StorageConsole Certified Configurations Guide and the APTARE StorageConsole Data Collector Installation Guide for Backup Manager.
Veritas Backup Exec - Planning the Data Collector Deployment
1. Identify a server where the Data Collector software will be installed. Server requirements include:
64-bit OS. See the APTARE StorageConsole Certified Configurations Guide for supported operating systems.
Support Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.7.
For performance reasons, APTARE recommends that you do not install Data Collectors on the same server as the StorageConsole Portal. However, if you must have both on the same server, verify that the Portal and Data Collector software do not reside in the same directory.
Install only one Data Collector on a server (or OS instance).
For most Backup Manager systems, install the Data Collector on a server that is in the same time zone as the backup server from which you are collecting data. For Veritas NetBackup and IBM TSM collection, the Data Collector server and backup server can be in different time zones.
Uses TCP port 1433. The BUE collector first connects via UDP on port 1434 to get information about available SQLServer instances, then connects via TCP to the port number that is returned for the specified instance. By default this is 1433.
If your environment requires NTML v2 authentication (Windows authentication) for the data collection connection, create a StorageConsole Advanced Parameter named USE_NTML_V2 and set the value to Y. Note that the StorageConsole default is NTML v1 (database authentication). Windows authentication is used when the Backup Exec server credentials configured in the Data Collector Policy contain a Windows domain name, username, and password. If Windows credentials are not in the policy, the connection defaults to using database authentication.
2. On the Data Collector server, add entries to the local hosts file, both resolving to the Portal server IP address.

Example:
172.16.2.2 aptareportal.<yourdomain>.com
172.16.2.3 aptareagent.<yourdomain>.com
Data Collector Configurations Specific to Backup Exec

1. Note the port used by the Backup Exec Data Collector: TCP 1433.
2. In the Portal, add a Backup Exec server: Admin > Hosts and Domains > Hosts and Host Groups.
Internal Name - Must match the host name of the Backup Exec server.
IP Address - IP address of the Backup Exec server.
Type - Backup Exec Data Collector.
3. Enable TCP/IP for the SQL Server.
4. Configure a Windows user with privileges to access the SQL Server that is hosting the Backup Exec database.
5. Gather other required configuration details: Default Windows Domain for the Data Collector server, Backup Exec Administrator Account and Password.
6. Create a CSV file of the Backup Exec servers with corresponding access parameters: WindowsdomainName,hostname,ip_address,dbInstance,adminUserName,adminPassword
7. Configure a Data Collector policy using the following details.
Field
Description
Collector Domain
The domain identifies the top level of your host group hierarchy. The name was supplied during the installation process. All newly discovered hosts are added to the root host group associated with this domain. If you are a Managed Services Provider, each of your customers will have a unique domain with its own host group hierarchy.
Policy Domain
The Policy Domain is the domain of the policy that is being configured for the Data Collector. The Policy Domain must be set to the same value as the Collector Domain.
The domain identifies the top level of your host group hierarchy. All newly discovered hosts are added to the root host group associated with the Policy Domain.
Typically, only one Policy Domain will be available in the drop-down list. If you are a Managed Services Provider, each of your customers will have a unique domain with its own host group hierarchy.
To find your Domain name select Admin > Hosts and Domains > Domains.
Default Windows Domain
Windows domain name; If the host is not a member of a domain, or to specify a local user account, use a period (.) to substitute the local host SSID for the domain.
Admin Account
Veritas Backup Exec Administrator account
Password
Veritas Backup Exec password associated with the account
8. On the Data Collector server, install/update the Data Collector software, using the instructions in the APTARE StorageConsole Data Collector Installation Guide for Backup Manager.
